The history of Anticosti Island began thousands of years ago. However, it was Frenchman Henry Menier who had the most profound impact on the island’s destiny. He acquired the island in about 1895 for hunting and fishing. Several major developments occurred while it was under his charge. For instance, we owe the presence of a large population of white-tailed deer to this chocolate baron, who introduced 220 of them to the island in 1896 and 1897.
