Sports and Outdoor Recreation Self-Guided Tours

The Lighthouse Trail

The Lighthouse Trail takes you to unique buildings and sites all along the St. Lawrence coast. This self-guided tour is also an opportunity to learn about an important part of Québec history. Come and discover how the lighthouse keepers used to live with their families in these often isolated locations. You can even immerse yourself in their world by spending the night in a lighthouse or lighthouse keeper’s house.

The Whale Route

Follow the Whale Route along Route 138 and encounter 13 species of whales, which you can observe from land or at sea. You can also visit interpretation centres along the coast to find out more about these fascinating animals. This scenic drive will take you to many of Côte-Nord’s natural attractions such as the Saguenay Fjord and the Sept-Îles and Mingan archipelagos. Route 138 ends in Natashquan—the only way to follow the whales further east is by plane or boat along the Lower North Shore.

Gaspé: Think Big!

Along 130 km of coastline, you will find many historic architectural gems, including Canada’s tallest lighthouse, Cap-des-Rosiers, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2008.

Located right in the middle of Gaspé, the marina, Jacques-Cartier boating club and Le Cormoran sailing school make Gaspé Bay a favourite among sailing enthusiasts.

Cap-Gaspé, at the tip of Forillon National Park of Canada, surely inspired the name Gaspé, which means “land’s end” in the Micmac language.

From Cap-aux-Os, you can observe feeding whales—they sometimes even swim into Gaspé Bay. A spectacular and unforgettable site!

There are lots of options for adrenaline junkies: a sailing and kite surfing school, scuba diving, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning and rafting on the York River (pictured).

In the summer, local sand and pebble beaches attract many visitors. In August, Haldimand Beach hosts an Ultimate Frisbee tournament.
