Website

Made up of one original heritage building and six reconstructed buildings, this site offers a representation of the heart of the village of Gaspé as it was in 1900. It includes a warehouse, tavern, photo shop, general store, seaplane base, residence and navy base.

The buildings are inhabited by costumed characters representing the people who marked the history of Gaspé. Each building includes an interpretation zone that features artefacts from private collections, interpretive panels and historical re-enactments.

Including works of art and other items, this site offers a perspective on the history of Gaspé in a setting full of contemporary accents.

Many free activities are offered throughout the season. You can wander through the site and visit the costumed characters in each building from June to September. Activities open to the general public are also organized in collaboration with local partners throughout the summer.

The historical site completes the Birthplace of Canada project, which includes a heritage trail in downtown Gaspé, a printed guide (available in our gift shop and from our partners) and a mobile application. The Birthplace of Canada app is available for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Interpretation Sites
Original heritage home, reconstructed buildings that once stood in the village of Gaspé and the Cross of Gaspé, which commemorates the arrival of Jacques Cartier. Interpretive activities with guides in period costumes. Program of events and shows. Guided tours available for groups.
Maritime Heritage
The site is strategically located along Gaspé Bay. It includes the heritage home of Horatio Le Boutillier as well as a gift shop and reconstructed buildings: a tavern, a general store, a warehouse, a seaplane base and a navy base.

How to get there

Located in downtown Gaspé, across the street from the Place Jacques Cartier shopping centre. Parking is available in the municipal parking area on Rue Harbour.

There is space for two buses to stop near the site on Route 198 (Montée de Wakeham).

The site and all buildings are accessible to people with reduced mobility.
