In any war, and certainly during the major global conflicts that ravaged the 20th century, small towns and villages feel the human cost more sharply: the lives lost devaste families and communities.
Located in the Council for Anglophone Magdalen Islanders’ Historical Heritage Complex, the Veterans Museum is dedicated to the memory and historical role of English- and French-speaking Islanders who served in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.
The museum’s collection includes interpretive panels as well as artefacts, letters and military medals. It also displays the diary of William Welsh, which he kept while he was in a prisoner-of-war camp in Hong Kong.
The intimate side of history is also underscored by the guides, whose anecdotes and local additions, often gleaned directly from family members and friends, provide personal insight into the history of these veterans.
Located beside the Veterans Museum, the Memorial Park honours the brave men and women from the Islands who died during the Second World War.
